The UCU-AIRTEA project, which is titled “Enhancing inclusive market access for African Indigenous Vegetables (AIV), seed and value-added products by Smallholder farmers in Uganda has been a game-changer for these farmers, particularly the youth, by introducing them to contract farming. This model has provided farmers with stable markets, financial security, and improved livelihoods, especially in the cultivation of pumpkins, tomatoes, and other indigenous African vegetables. Our role was to document key successes and best practices, producing strategic communications and knowledge products.

Uganda
The Opportunity
In a rapidly evolving world, the role of communication in development cannot be overstated. Recently, a training session was held in Namibia, where communications officers from 12 African countries gathered to enhance their skills in shaping sharp narratives that drive change. Supported by the TAGDev2.0 initiative—funded by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by RUFORUM—this training focused on empowering higher education institutions to play a pivotal role in Africa’s development through effective communication. Position Communication Officers as stakeholder facilitators for advancing university missions.
Our Solution

By embracing the power of sharp, well-crafted narratives, they have the potential to transform challenges into opportunities and inspire a generation to lead Africa toward sustainable growth. In this workshop, Communication Officers were expected to develop enhanced capacities in articulating development contexts, segmenting results impact reporting for development influencing, and advancing university missions. This workshop adopted a collaborative and co-creative learning approach that incorporated brainstorming, consultative sessions, and reflective engagement for the 10th and 11th of August, 2024. A practicum of the Community of Practice (CoP) served to allow participants hands-on experience during the conference. Communication representatives from African universities met during the #RUFTriennial24 Conference to strategize, learn, and appreciate their Institutional roles ahead of the TAGDev 2.0 Launch by RUFORUM Network and the Mastercard Foundation.
